Understanding Endodontic treatment

To understand endodontic treatment ,one need to know the anatomy of the tooth-
Inside the tooth,under hard enamel and dentin,is a soft tissue called pulp, which contains blood vessels,nerves
and connective tissues.
This pulp tissue within the centre of the tooth is connected to the tissues surrounding the tooth root.

Why would I need endodontic treatment

Root canal treatment is needed when pulp becomes inflammed or infected or decayed due to variety of causes like-

If this infected or inflammed pulp left untreated ,it can cause pain or lead to abscess formation.

How Root Canal treatment save my tooth

In root canal treatment ,infected or inflammed pulp is removed from root canal (inside of tooth) .
Root canal space is then carefully cleaned and preapred with root canal instruments to receive the filling.
In the next appointment , the tooth is covered with crown to protect the tooth and restore it to normal function.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Will I feel pain during or after treatment?

Except in few cases, where anesthesia is not required, the procedure is done under local anesthesia.
So there is no pain during the treatment.Patient is usually comfortable during the treatment.
After the treatment,tooth may remain senstive or may not bear biting pressure for first few days.
This can be releived by medication or sometimes releiving the tooth out of occlusion.
However, for prolonged symptoms,patient is recommended to call his dentist.

What special care is required after treatment?

No special care is required after treatment.Patient is recommended only not to bite or chew with
the treated tooth to avoid fracture until it is fully protacted with crown.

What about the success of the treatment?

Most endodontically treated teeth last as long as other natural teeth.However, if the treatment fail and
the tooth becomes painful and infected, retreatment can be done to save the tooth.

Is my tooth a good candidate for root canal treatment?

All teeth can be treated endodonticallyexcept for-

In these cases,only extraction is indicated, after which fixed tooth replacement is done with bridge or implant

Treatment fails either due to incomplete treatment done by the dentist.
